A WORD OF WARNING : The airfield site is still owned my the Ministry of Defence and administered by STANTA, it is used for training regularly and often has aircraft landing. The photos I have taken 'airside' on the airfield itself have been part of an organised visit. Do not enter the airfield site without permission.

AIRFIELD SITE : Atomic Weapon Loading Pits

Sadly now filled in but these are a very unusual and unique part of RAF Sculthorpe's history. The two pits located on the north side of the airfield are believed to have been constructed when the airfield was upgraded to Very Heavy Bomber (VHB) configuration. The USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC) based Boeing B-50's at Sculthorpe in the late 1940's and the early 1950's. The pits are understood to based on the same design that was used to load the atomic devices which where dropped on Japan to effectively end the Second World War. It is not known if the pits at Sculthorpe were ever used.

An F-100 Super Sabre stood on this roundabout as a gate guard for RAF Sculthorpe. It arrived in the early 1980's and was removed from duty in 1989, it is understood the aircraft was then scrapped.

After the base closed the building was turned into a fast food takeaway but this was unsuccessful and it closed after about a year.
