On 8 December 1943 Taxi Driver Harry C Hailstone was murdered by two American Servicemen based at Birch. His taxi was found abandoned in this area of Hayes Green Road and his body was discovered two days later in a ditch near Birch Rectory. The two American Servicemen found guilty of his murder were Private J C Leatherberry and Private George Fowler.
